Activities

Since its foundation the British-Ukrainian Law Association has held a number of seminars and workshops in Ukraine which have been funded from different sources including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Know-How Fund, the Department for International Development and funds provided by the HM Embassy in Kyiv. Projects have covered topics as diverse as Commercial Arbitration (1994), Rights and Welfare of Children (1995), Independence of the Judiciary (1996) and Public Law (1998).

In addition the Association has organised seminars at home – Legal Business in Ukraine (2002), The Orange Revolution and the Rule of Law (2006).

In 2001 members of the committee travelled to Transcarpathia at the invitation of the Governor to offer help on the establishment of the Zakarpattya Special Economic Zone. In 2003 members of the committee accompanied the Lord Mayor of London on his official visit to Kyiv and hosted a seminar at the British Council in Kyiv.

In 2004 the Association funded 3 observers to travel to Kyiv to observe the first and second round of the momentous presidential elections. In 2006 the Association promoted an essay competition for young Ukrainian lawyers.

Prominent British and Ukrainian Lawyers have participated in these events, together with members of other professions and disciplines. The Committee is keen to involve Members of the Association in these activities, which have been well received, and which do, we believe, make a significant contribution to the development of the law and the legal system in Ukraine.

The Association has established good relations with legal groups, firms and individual lawyers and jurists in Ukraine.

The Committee also organises events for its members to which guests are frequently invited. Following each Annual General Meeting there is an informal dinner which all members are encouraged to attend.

The Committee co-operates closely with the International Unit of the Law Society and the International Relations Committee of the Bar Council and participates in some of their activities. The Association also has links with other central and eastern European bi-lateral law associations.
